Aid Without Borders and Sails of Hope – Working together for the betterment of all

Aid Without Borders has just wrapped up an ambitious and expansive project in Northern State, Sudan. We collaborated with a local charity called Sails of Hope. We used your generous donations and support to improve the lives of the people here.

The Northern State Comprehensive Intervention Project was launched to address the core problems and challenges that the people were facing. We are proud to say that we have made significant progress in our goals and helped individuals and entire families live better lives.

Background

As you no doubt know, the war in Sudan has displaced millions of people, and many are fighting for survival each day. There is a lack of food and safety, and the destruction of infrastructure has left many people without healthcare. Due to a lack of proper sanitation, diseases are also spreading, further deteriorating people’s lives.

Because of this chaos, many people have fled Dongola, Northern State, Sudan, where shelters are operating and dedicated to helping people escape the devastation. These shelters provide food and safety, but further support is needed in order to help the increasing number of people who arrive seeking aid.

The project had four significant avenues: establishing a central kitchen, a breastfeeding and nutrition campaign, a child-friendly spaces and awareness campaign for women, and an environmental health and sanitation campaign. Here is what we did.

Establishment of a Central Kitchen

On Tuesday, 5th of November 2024, Sails of Hope and Aid Without Borders organized a rapid intervention activity in the Alnamozajyah Shelter Center in the Dongola Locality in Sudan. We established a center that provided healthy, filling, and ready-to-eat meals to the displaced and suffering people of the local regions.

As stated, many people have flocked to Dongola to escape war and disease, but providing aid has become more difficult than ever. Regardless, we met this challenge as an opportunity to help people, and in total, we helped 170 families, with an average number of 5 people per family. In total, our central kitchen fed 850 individuals.

This endeavor had more benefits than our intended goal of alleviating hunger in the region. In fact, we found out that our intervention contributed to increased community ties and even provided partial job opportunities for displaced people. Furthermore, the community benefited from increased purchases, and we recorded partial recovery in shops and service providers.

Child-Friendly Spaces and Awareness Campaign for Women

Children are the most at risk of the conflict in Sudan. Many have lost their childhoods, moving from one place to another and clinging to survival. This displacement has left many children out of school and has led them down a path of self-destruction. Women are also suffering heavily, with many suffering from violence and assault.

That is why on the 5th of November, Aid Without Borders and Sails of Hope joined hands to implement child-friendly spaces programs and launch an awareness campaign for women at the Alnamozajyah shelter center at Dongola. We focused on enriching the lives of children and women specifically and set up many activities for them.

We arranged games, drawing and coloring activities, music, competitions, gifts, and exercises to build self-confidence. Furthermore, we also raised awareness about domestic and school violence and gender-based violence for women. Ultimately, we were able to reach 216 children from ages 4-18 and 30 women. We are proud to say that the project was a massive success.

Breastfeeding and Nutrition Campaign

On Saturday, the 9th of November, we ran an awareness campaign for mothers on breastfeeding and nutrition pregnancy in two IDP shelters alongside Sails of Hope in Dongola. Considering how important child health is for a community’s long-term sustainability, we believe there should be no compromise on that.

For this project, we targeted pregnant and lactating mothers in shelters in the displacement areas. These families, especially mothers, have suffered heavily from poverty and were not able to access basic health services. This posed an immense challenge as they were unable to provide balanced nutrition for themselves and their children.

However, we were committed to our goal of creating a generation that is healthy and knowledgeable. Our campaign provided resources, educated the mothers, and helped them maintain their health as well as that of their children. In total, we helped 170 families, with a total number of 216 children and 30 women.

Environmental Health and Sanitation Campaign

In war-torn areas, sanitation is often neglected. Poor hygiene and sanitation can be like a sleeping beast and cause diseases, which can deteriorate the quality of life for people who have been displaced. That is why it was imperative that we act fast and launch an Environmental Health and Sanitation campaign on the 9th of November.

Over the course of this project, Aid Without Borders and Sails of Hope collaborated on various water activities at Abdullah bin Abi Sarh Center, Al-Saraya Center, and Al-Ahlia Center in Dongola. We worked to disinfect the shelter and raise awareness about cleanliness. We also curbed the transmission of diseases through sewage contamination and waste accumulation.

Our project was a resounding success and had many benefits for the 100 families we helped. We successfully improved health conditions, reduced disease spread, promoted positive health behaviors, and improved waste management. Ultimately, we saw an improved quality of life in shelters and built up stronger communities that can live healthier lives.
